This painting explores the fear I have always held toward the concept of motherhood. As a child-free, thirty-year-old woman, I genuinely believe the purpose of my twenties was to spend my youth gathering experiences of myself, the world, and other people.
Through those experiences, and by first building a life that feels deeply whole and abundant on my own, I have begun to view motherhood less as a cage and more as an opportunity to expand the boundaries of my emotional world and deepen my connection to the beautiful mystery of life itself.
And perhaps, one day, to raise a human being or two who carry forward values rooted in love, kindness, spiritual wholeness, and an appreciation for our planet.
To me, this painting expresses both the natural beauty of motherhood and the deeply personal fear many women hold around losing their sovereignty. Yet I've come to see that belief as something of an enigma, because genuine connection with others may be one of the very things that allows us to become more fully ourselves.
